Topic West’s, The Day of the Locust, does anything but envision a better world.

Topic West’s, The Day of the Locust, does anything but envision a better world. It envisions an apocalyptic nightmare, a dystopia in which apathy and boredom prevail, where human relationships are predatory and fraught, and where hopes and dreams are crushed under the weight of mass culture. The hopes for democracy espoused by Whitman and Dewey were blighted again by World War I and the Great Depression. Instead of offering a reprieve from this despair, material culture, advertising culture, and the movies work only to further isolate people. Authentic human feelings and desires are impossible. Like the Biblical reference in its title, mankind has been plagued for its sins, and there is little hope for its redemption. That’s where you come in. Focusing on one character in West’s novel, envision a better world for them. Determine what social, cultural, and/or economic forces have landed this character in their predicament, and propose a path forward for them. What needs to change to give them hope, to let them live in a better world? Finally, following Whitman, consider the role that art or literature plays in in making better worlds. How does West’s novel, bleak and nightmarish as it is, help? Or Tod Hackett’s painting? You should support your answer using passages from West’s novel, and you may include up to two secondary sources. These should either be secondary texts on West’s novel, such as critical essays, or non-fictional works on 1930s California and/or Hollywood or the Great Depression as they relate to your topic. Things to Remember: Take for granted the the Great Depression is the umbrella problem for all of these characters, but consider how race, gender, class, age, and other factors create unique problems for each of them. Do not engage in magical thinking solutions. The help you offer must be plausible and somewhat within reach. You can’t simply say the world would be better if everyone got along, or if people cared less about money, or that people just shouldn’t let societal forces affect them . You can’t simply say we need gender or racial equality. Scale these sweeping gestures down to meaningful first steps that could be plausibly implemented and achieved in a reasonable length of time for these characters. Use the Palomar College library databases to screen outside sources. Avoid open source, googling for answers. The best papers will be narrowly focused: One character, one major thing working against them, one plausible way forward for them. Arrangement: Make sure it has the following parts: Exordium (Introduction): Review what kind of information goes here from paper 1. Be sure you include a plausible thesis here. What is the major force operating against the character you choose, and what reasonable solution is within reach for this character? Narration For this paper, this is a good place to use the primary text to show what social, cultural, and/or economic forces are operating against your character. You should narrow your focus here. While you can concede that many forces operate against this character, you should focus your attention on one of them that stands above the rest. Confirmation This is the heart of the paper, your argument and your evidence. This is where you argue for the specific change that could give your character hope or lead them out of their predicament. Your solution must be plausible and within reach; it can’t exhibit “magical thinking” such as “People should just all treat each other nice.” This is a good section to consider outside sources. Refutation (counter-argument) Anticipate and address possible objections to your position and your evidence. What other forces might be operating against this character? What else might improve their world? What are the impediments to your solution for them? Peroration (Conclusion) Review the purpose of conclusions from paper 1. This may be a good place to address the final question in the prompt about the role art can play in envisioning better worlds. Specific Requirements An original title

Role: As the newly assigned Chief Financial Officer (CFO) of (choose ONE organization):
a. AIR CANADA
b. UBER
c. Amazon
You are drafting the year end report to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO). The organisation is running a study to track and highlight the two most significant (macro)economic challenges that are likely to affect the organisation’s performance in the foreseeable future and to propose strategies to deal with those challenges in the most effective way. With a view to highlighting the accounting input in these strategies, you plan to focus on identifying specific financial or management accounting tools that could facilitate the organisation in dealing with the identified challenges.
The report shall include four key parts.
1. The first part shall include financial highlights over the last four accounting periods, a brief description of the challenges that you identified (along with a justification for choosing them) and an evaluation of how these challenges have already affected financials. This part is your opportunity to exhibit your data analytics skills by gathering financial information into a spreadsheet, producing relevant ratios and plots and you can then input into the report. When plotting the key ratios that you choose, add a line for the industry average or a peer firm of your choice. Assessing relative performance when dealing with macroeconomic challenges is a crucial step. This first part of the report shall not exceed 3 pages.
2. The second part shall include one page theoretical diagram for each of the two challenges identified in 1) that fully and accurately reflects the associations. In the diagram you shall demonstrate the financial or management tools that you identified as enabling the organisation to deal with the challenge, the channels/actions through which these tools enable each organizational to deal with the challenge, and the desired outcomes achieved by the undertaken actions . You may decide the level of detail and type of information to enter the diagrams so long it is in one page per challenge identified. The diagrams should be part of your presentation to the CEO so they shall reflect the essence of your analysis for the particular organization as fully and accurately as possible. This part of the report shall not exceed 2 pages.
3. The third part of the report shall include a summary of all key points emanating from each diagram of part 2. This is the part where you can explain in detail how the financial or management accounting tools that you identified in part 2 help the organization chosen deal with the identified challenges. This part of the analysis shall not exceed 2 pages.
4. The fourth and final part of the report shall conclude the analysis and provide the CEO founded recommendations for the way forward. This is the part where you aggregate your analysis to offer the CEO specific action points. This part of the analysis shall not exceed 2 pages.
Deliverables: Your report shall not exceed 9 pages in length.

Class: Accounting
Unit VI Case Study
Part I
Natalie is struggling to keep up with the recording of her accounting transactions. She is spending a lot of time marketing and selling mixers and giving her cookie classes. Her friend John is an accounting student who runs his own accounting service. He has asked Natalie if she would like to have him do her accounting.
John and Natalie meet and discuss her business. John suggests that he do the tasks listed below for Natalie.
Hold cash until there is enough to be deposited. (He would keep the cash locked up in his vehicle). He would also take all of the deposits to the bank at least twice a month.
Write and sign all of the checks.
Record all of the deposits in the accounting records.
Record all of the checks in the accounting records.
Prepare the monthly bank reconciliation.
Transfer all of Natalie’s manual accounting records to his computer accounting program. (John would maintain all of the accounting information that he keeps for his clients on his laptop computer.)
Prepare monthly financial statements for Natalie to review.
Write himself a check every month for the work he has done for Natalie.
For Part I of the assignment, identify the weaknesses in internal control that you see in the system that John is recommending. Can you suggest any improvements if Natalie hires John to do the accounting?
Part I should be a minimum of two pages in length. Please use APA format. While there are no required resources, please be sure that any sources used have proper citations.
Part II
Natalie decides that she cannot afford to hire John to do her accounting. One way that she can ensure that her cash account does not have any errors and is accurate and up-to-date is to prepare a bank reconciliation at the end of each month. Natalie would like you to help her. She asks you to prepare a bank reconciliation for June 2020 using the information below.
General Ledger Cookie Creations
Additionally, take the following information into account.
On May 31, there were two outstanding checks: #595 for $238 and #604 for $297.
Premier Bank made a posting error to the bank statement: Check #603 was issued for $425, not $452.
The deposit made on June 20 was for $125, which Natalie received for teaching a class. Natalie made an error in recording this transaction.
The electronic funds transfer (EFT) was for Natalie’s cell phone use. Remember that she uses this phone only for business.
The NSF check was from Ron Black. Natalie received this check for teaching a class to Ron’s children. Natalie contacted Ron, and he assured her that she will receive a check in the mail for the outstanding amount of the invoice and the NSF bank charge.
For Part II of the assignment, complete the tasks below.
Prepare Cookie Creations’ bank reconciliation for June 30.
Prepare any necessary adjusting entries at June 30.

Class: Accounting
Unit VII Case Study
Cookie Creations (Chapters 11 and 15)
This assignment is a continuation of the Cookie Creations case study and focuses on Cookie Creations’ liabilities (current and long-term). From the information gathered from the unit lesson, required unit resources, and suggested unit resources, read the Cookie Creations case study below, which is also available on p.11-37 (Chapter 11) and p. 15-38 (Chapter 15) in the textbook.
The case study allows you to apply what you have learned about liabilities and the accounting process. This assignment will allow you to practice what you have learned so far.
Part I
Recall that Cookie Creations sells fine European mixers that it purchases from Kzinski Supply Company. Kzinski warrants the mixers to be free of defects in material and workmanship for 1 year from the date of original purchase. If the mixer has such a defect, Kzinski will repair or replace the mixer free of charge for parts and labor. The product must be shipped prepaid to an authorized Kzinski service center. The consumer pays the cost to ship the mixer. The cost to return the product to the consumer is paid by Kzinski.
The authorized service center is located in Boston. Because Cookie Creations values serving its customers, it pays the shipping to Boston for any mixers needing repair under Kzinski’s warranty terms. Based on past experience, Kzinski has found that approximately 10% of mixers are returned for repair or replacement. The average cost to ship a mixer to Boston is $60.
The following transactions take place in 2020 and 2021.
A total of 30 mixers are sold in 2020.
Four of the mixers sold in 2020 are returned for repair in 2021. The total shipping cost for returning these four mixers to Boston is $210.
A total of 40 mixers are sold in 2021.
Two of the mixers sold in 2021 are returned for repair in 2021. The total shipping cost for returning these two mixers to Boston is $55.
For Part I of the assignment, complete the tasks listed below using Excel.
Calculate Cookie Creations’ warranty liability for the shipping costs at December 31, 2020.
Record the estimated warranty liability at December 31, 2020.
Prepare the summary journal entry (or entries) to record the shipment of the six mixers (four from the 2020 sales and two from the 2021 sales) for warranty repair in 2021. d.
Calculate Cookie Creations’ warranty liability at December 31, 2021. (Hint: Note that there is no liability outstanding for the mixers sold in 2020. The 1-year warranty period has expired.)
Record the estimated warranty liability at December 31, 2021. (Hint: Similar to accounting for bad debts, consider any existing balance in the warranty liability account when you prepare your entry. You will find it helpful to prepare a general ledger account for the warranty liability and to post the above transactions.)
Part II
Natalie and Curtis have been experiencing great demand for their cookies and muffins. As a result, they are now thinking about buying a commercial oven. They know which oven they want and that it will cost $17,000. The company already has $5,000 set aside for the purchase and will need to borrow the rest.
Natalie and Curtis met with a bank manager to discuss their options. She is willing to lend Cookie & Coffee Creations Inc. $12,000 on November 1, 2020, for 3 years at a 5% interest rate. The terms provide for fixed principal payments of $2,000 on May 1 and November 1 of each year plus 6 months of interest.
For Part II of the assignment, complete the tasks listed below.
Prepare a payment schedule for the life of the note.
Prepare the journal entry for the purchase of the oven and the issue of the note payable on November 1, 2020.
Prepare the journal entries on May 1 and November 1 for the note.
Determine the current portion of the note payable and the long-term portion of the note payable at October 31, 2021.
Parts I and II should be submitted in a single Excel spreadsheet. You will use a new tab to complete each transaction for both Parts I and II for a total of nine separate tabs or sheets. Submit the Excel spreadsheet in Blackboard.

Reflection paper 1 (1000 word minimum): This paper is an opportunity to respond to the question “What is Information”. You must reflect on its meaning for your professional practice or your development as an information professional or scholar. The paper should have a clear introduction that includes a thesis statement and direct quotes from the text; a well-supported analysis that reflects consideration of the readings; and a meaningful conclusion that addresses the implications of your reflection and analysis for your future as an information professional. There’s some freedom to develop your reflection paper in the way that you want; however, there are guidelines and recommendations. Demonstrate your understanding of the course content Reflect on its significance Discuss its application in a specific professional environment A typical paper might start with by addressing the questions of What?, So What? and Now What? Summarizing the unit (What?) should only be a preface to the real work of the paper. Discussing the significance of the unit content (So What?) and the actual or hypothetical application into your professional activities (Now What?) are the core of the reflection. A paper might discuss the main themes, new information, and theories that you encountered and then discuss the how it can impact your profession. Since the paper is expected to be original work if you incorporate quotations or material from other sources, it must be cited as such. The preferred style is the most recent edition of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association. The reference page will not count towards total page numbers. Generally, papers will be graded on the depth of reflection, the way that you incorporate both theory and practice and the effectiveness of the written communication. The rubric for this assignment clarifies specific expectations for both reflection content and writing effectiveness.

Answer one of the two Discussion Board questions: Question 1: What is your status set? What are the roles (or role set) to each status? When have you experienced role strain? When have you experienced role conflict? What is your master status? or Question 2: Explain Erving Goffman’s dramaturgical analysis and how we engage in “presentation of self.” Give at least 3 real examples from your life when you present yourself to others to create an impression. For example, the way you decorate your room, apartment or how you dress. What are you trying to say about yourself? teachers note: I noticed that some of you are taking the Discussion Board questions lightly and many of you did not read the Rubric for Grading. A few words of advice: Approach these Discussion Board questions (DBQs) as if they are mini-papers. It’s 1 page, 250 words, at minimum. Your answers should paraphrase the text, use quotes, cite pages and really show me you understand the concept. These DBQs are worth 20% of your grade. That’s a lot. Take them seriously. I do. Rubric for Grading To earn the full 10 points, when posting, your answer should: • Be no less than 250 words. (I run a word count before I begin reading.) • Answer the question asked. I can’t stress this enough. Is your answer substantive, detailed, not generalized? Does it use facts and quotes from the book? Your answer should show comprehension of the subject matter. • Be well organized. • In short, your answer exhibits ample evidence of having reviewed or completed the relevant readings. You will earn less than 10 points if your answer: • Is less than 250 words. • Is somewhat responsive to the question and shows some evidence of reading the course materials, but the answer is not backed up with facts or quotes from the book or other sources. • Lacks specificity. In short, your answer lacks evidence that you reviewed or read the relevant readings
