It envisions an apocalyptic nightmare, a dystopia in which apathy and boredom prevail, where human relationships are predatory and fraught, and where hopes and dreams are crushed under the weight of mass culture. The hopes for democracy espoused by Whitman and Dewey were blighted again by World War I and the Great Depression. Instead of offering a reprieve from this despair, material culture, advertising culture, and the movies work only to further isolate people. Authentic human feelings and desires are impossible. Like the Biblical reference in its title, mankind has been plagued for its sins, and there is little hope for its redemption. That’s where you come in. Focusing on one character in West’s novel, envision a better world for them. Determine what social, cultural, and/or economic forces have landed this character in their predicament, and propose a path forward for them. You are drafting the year end report to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO). Recall that Cookie Creations sells fine European mixers that it purchases from Kzinski Supply Company. Kzinski warrants the mixers to be free of defects in material and workmanship for 1 year from the date of original purchase. If the mixer has such a defect, Kzinski will repair or replace the mixer free of charge for parts and labor. The product must be shipped prepaid to an authorized Kzinski service center. The consumer pays the cost to ship the mixer. The cost to return the product to the consumer is paid by Kzinski.
The authorized service center is located in Boston. Because Cookie Creations values serving its customers, it pays the shipping to Boston for any mixers needing repair under Kzinski’s warranty terms.
