At some intuitive level, having lived in the poverty of the Depression, then seeing the branded affluence of the American 1950’s, Warhol could sense where the whole mess was going. So he took the objects of meaning – brands – created by the commercial artists of the marketing machine, and fired them back at the “art world” to demonstrate that the real meaning in U. S. life derived from a sort of meaningless consumption. Needless to say, this pop art infuriated to no end the more seemingly serious (or at least more self important) artists and their nabobs.
So was Warhol a great artist? Whose to say, but have you ever seen a de Kooning coffee mug?
