When I read the statement “Theory must be a guide to practice, not an end in itself”, I interpret it as the importance of studying a variety of theories and use them as a resource to model my nursing practice. In addition, learning about nursing theory is only the start, because when theory is put into practice that is when nursing can grow and develop. This statement also reminds me of Smith and Parker (2020) addressing how theory guides nursing practice by providing the framework that distinguishes nursing practice from other disciples and guide how nurses interact with patients and view each health circumstance. I also interpret this statement as nursing theory is not an end in itself because it is used to advance the practice of nursing. An example of how nursing theory is used to develop practice is when Bender and Feldman (2015) studied the nursing metaparadigm concepts of nursing, person, health, and environment and identified how the environment is often overlapped with nursing. Bender and Feldman (2015) state “The current metaparadigm conceptualization has generated significant blind spots in inquiry and practice” (p. 101). They use this information to develop Practice Theory as a means of viewing a different connection between nursing practice and the environment to ultimately expanding nursing knowledge and practice (Bender & Feldman, 2015).
My personal philosophy in week one consisted of the tenets of being a patient advocate, valuing the importance of education for patients and providers, and to always provide objective, nonjudgmental, compassionate care that values my patient’s definition of health and quality of life. These original tenets remain true to me today, however through learning more about nursing theory, my philosophy has changed by adding the tenet of encouraging patient participation. Encouraging patient participation is something I have always done in my practice, but may have been overlooked to a degree when in critical, time sensitive situations. A specific theory that showed me the importance of this, despite the circumstance, is Liehr and Smith’s Story Theory. Story Theory highlights the importance of inviting the patient into their health journey by initially asking them what matters most to them in order to embrace their view of health to create ease and promote healthy changes in their life (Liehr & Smith, 2020). Studying nursing theory has developed my personal view of nursing and has given me more of a guide and strategies for interacting with my patients and their family members to provide the best holistic care I can.

In order to interpret the statement one must know what is the definition of theory. Theory is a “notion or an idea that explains experience, interprets observation, describes relationships, and suggests outcomes” (Smith, 2020.) With the above statement that “theory must be a guide to practice, not an end in itself” we can see that theory is an explanation as to why something happens but it does not mean we stop practicing. Evidence based practice is the ability to perform interventions that have the greatest outcome or success. Each day we are trying to make things such as testing and treatment options better for the population we treat. We are searching for the latest and greatest interventions so that we can ensure patient safety and satisfaction. Nursing interventions are forever changing. Although theories are present it does not mean that we can not deviate from what the theory states or that a different outcome will not occur. For example there are many ways that we can perform math problems and end up with the same answer. Just because we did not follow the straight line we still obtained the same answer. “We have found that having only theoretical knowledge of pathophysiological problems caused us to feel overwhelmed during clinical placement” (Wyllie et. al, 2020.) This statement can help defend that just knowing the theory is not enough to end.The theory explains the why and gives a general idea of what may happen but we do not have to stop what we are doing because we have someone who has explained or experienced it before.
My three beliefs of nursing are that
Nurses are caring and provide compassionate care
Nursing is forever evolving and changing
Nursing is about educating and being an advocate for those who need it most
As this class has finally reached its last week my beliefs have not changed but I have determined that many theorists have the same views as myself. I have learned that many theorists support my beliefs besides my second belief. I have not found a theorist yet that supports that or that state that nursing is an evolving door.. As stated above evidence based practice is the ability to trial interventions and make changes to obtain the best outcome. For example the treatment of cancer with the use of adjuvant therapy and medical treatment has proven to be successful in some cases but not others. The self care deficit theory and many others validated that nurses provide assistance when it is needed the most and that education is paramount to the individuals we care for. I have truly enjoyed this course and learning about the theories. It has been many years for me since my bachelor’s program so I enjoyed learning what I may have not paid much attention to before.
